Nordic-Style Land Management Scythe (no peening required)
A very low-maintenance hardened steel scythe that does not need peening -- our personal favorite scythe for very uneven ground.
While Austrian and East European scythes are typically made of soft steel that can be periodically hammered (peened) to produce a thinner, almost razor-sharp, cutting edge, other scythe traditions – notably those in Scandinavia – have long favored harder steel which can withstand more use without sharpening – especially at remote field sites.
This 66-centimeter blade is only 4-centimeters wide, thus remaining lightweight and nimble despite the higher density metal. While this blade doesn’t achieve the precise razor-sharpness of softer scythes, it maintains its sharpness much longer especially on uneven ground where rocks, or woody branches might be encountered. The result is that it takes a bit more effort to use this blade, however it saves labor otherwise spent on blade maintenance. This is first-class land management tool especially when dealing with thicker, more diverse vegetation, and variable landscape conditions.
Note that while this blade can take down most green vegetation, it isn't a blade for heavy woody species or super thick stems like blackberries. For those heavier plants, please look at our Forestry and Brush Scythe and our Meadow and Light Brush Scythes, both of which have stronger cutting power against sapling trees and shrubs.
This set includes an ergonomically curved, lightweight alpine-style ash handle (snath) with adjustable hand grips. Select a 150-cm handle if you are about 5’10” tall or less, and 160-cm handle if you are taller than 5’10”.
This tool is pre-sharpened and ready to use. For maintenance we recommend either:
- Hand-sharpening with the Coarse-Grit Blaaumark Whetstone, followed by the medium-grit Austrian "Styria" whetstone, -or
- Resharpening occasionally with a slow speed grinding wheel
Assembly and use instructions included.
Refund Policy: Please note we are very happy to provide a full refund on scythes that are returned in new and unused condition.
