Entokei Hokkaido Hakusai Seeds (北海道円筒形ハクサイ)(白菜)(배추)
With a cool-climate northern lineage, this is a superior pickling and cooking cabbage variety, well adapted to short growing seasons. (50 to 65 days to maturity).
Likely developed using superior seed stock from China, during Japan’s early Showa era (1920s) this is a true cylindrical (heading) type of Chinese cabbage that stores very well – up to two months with refrigeration or cool storage – and is excellent eating quality especially in kimchi, okonomiyaki, stir fry, and hot pot dishes.
This is vegetable designed for cool climates. It’s okay sown in the spring, but excellent quality when sown in the late summer of early autumn. (Note that when growing in fall, the head can be tied up, by wrapping a string around the outer leaves. This will protect the higher quality inner core from frost damage).
Sow in high fertility soils but without synthetic fertilizers which can lead to discolored stems. Note also that all Chinese cabbage varieties can be prone to insect herbivores (especially aphids, particularly when grown in warm weather). Growing under floating row cover is a great way to exclude insects.
Approximately 200 to 400 seeds (1.0 grams).
