Traditional Golden Bantam 8-Row Sweet Corn Seeds
Unparalleled reliability. Hardy. Fast growing. Well adapted to cool climates and northern latitudes. These are the fundamental traits of this 1890s heirloom sweetcorn. Maturing in 75 to 85 days these excellently compact plants (typically less than 6-feet in height) produce nice 5 to 6-inch long “dinner-plate-sized” ears that are marvelous roasted or steamed, and which store very well as whole frozen ears.
The mound-method is extremely convenient for growing small sweet corn gardens. The clumping of multiple plants on mounds ensures good pollination, and the clumps of multiple plants help support each other in resisting wind which tends to knock over corn stalks. Additionally, because corn is a nutrient-hungry plant, the creation of small planting mounts allows you to concentrate nutrients where the plants are actively growing, helping them reach their full potential.
To plant corn with the mound method, you construct small raised hills of soil (about 2-feet in diameter and 6-inches tall) with ample compost or organic matter mixed into the soil. Within the center of each hill, plant 4 to 8 seeds. By spacing these mounds 3 feet or so apart from each other, it also allows for easy access and inspection of the plants within the garden.
A 1920’s seed catalogue said of Golden Bantam:
"We place this at the head of our list, as we consider it the ideal Corn for the home garden. For sweetness and richness of flavor it has no equal. It is a hardy, early maturing variety of very dwarf growth and can, therefore, be planted closer than other sorts and through a longer range of season. The cob is small, but fills out nicely with large, deep cream-colored kernels, which turn to yellow when entirely ripe. Our seed is northern grown, which assures the highest standard of vitality and permits of very early planting. No family garden should be without a plot of this excellent Corn.”
