Folks in with short growing seasons often think watermelons are impossible to grow, however this small, traditional heirloom bears fruit in just 75 to 80 days. (Compare that to the 100- to 120-day ripening time of other watermelon varieties!).

Growing from short vines not much more than 6-feet in length, and producing up to about a half-dozen melons per vine, Sugar Baby has a beautiful deep dark-green rind with faint lighter green tiger stripes. The melons themselves are less than a foot in diameter with super sweet, crisp, bright-red flesh. (Note this is considered possibly the sweetest watermelon variety ever developed). Because of the compact size of this plant, it can tolerate confined spaces very well (e.g. large containers or small garden beds). Indeed, Sugar Baby is compact enough that it grows beautifully on a trellis, and especially thrives when trellised against a sunny wall or on a hot deck or patio.

Like all watermelons, Sugar Baby prefers some warmth and full sun, restrained (but ample) moisture, and it is nutrient-hungry, enjoying compost-rich soils. (Note that overwatering, or watering the foliage rather than the root zone will encourage fungal diseases on this, and virtually any melon plant).

We recommend starting Sugar Baby indoors, in a sunny window, and moving it outside as the ambient temperatures warm into the high 70s and 80s. It will enjoy the onset of peak summer heat, so it is best timed accordingly.

30+ seeds (1.2 grams).
